Confirmation/ Youth

The Confirmation process is in association with Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Independence, and  is open to all youth of the parish that have completed eighth grade. The youth meet in the home of a group leader to involve themselves in functions that are social, spiritual and service oriented. Diocesan guidelines require days of reflection and retreats as well as volunteer service work in the local and broader community.

Confirmation/ Adults

Adults who have been baptized in the Catholic Church but have not received the sacrament of confirmation and desire to do so should set up an appointment with Fr. Bob Stone to determine the most appropriate preparation program for the individual. The preparation program may include either a series of meetings in a group or as an individual leading to the annual confirmation rite celebrated with the Bishop or participation in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).

Initiation of Children Over Age 6

Unbaptized children or those whose faith experience has been in another tradition at age 7 become part of a family process. The family is immersed within the community and a few rites are celebrated as well. If continued discernment by family, children, and parish concurs, the child(ren) receive baptism, confirmation and Eucharist (usually during the Easter season).

Celebrations of the gift of a loved one’s life in faith are aided by pre-planning. Funeral seminars are periodically presented to offer assistance in preparing appropriate Scriptures, music, prayers, and other ritual selections. Christians deserve Christian burial.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

Adults journey with parishioners and staff in exploring whether participation and worship in the Roman Catholic Church is where God is calling him/her. The process involves spiritual growth and discernment, knowing Jesus personally, learning about Church doctrine, beliefs, traditions and practices, and how to live as a Catholic in today’s world. Entrance into the church usually takes place during the Easter Vigil, depending upon the faith journey of the individual and parish process, with Baptism or Profession of Faith, Confirmation and Eucharist. Parishioners are invited to assist in this ministry with their prayers, hospitality, sponsorship, teaching, and assisting with days of recollection/retreats.
